U.S. bio startup Radical NewMetrics has administered an AI-designed virus to a patient infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The company announced the step on October 20 (local time), describing it as a key milestone in applying artificial intelligence to targeted infection treatment.
According to the company, the therapy was carried out under a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) system that allows experimental treatments for patients who cannot benefit from existing therapies. This framework enables the use of novel approaches when standard options no longer help the patient.
First human use of an AI-designed phage
This is described as the first attempt to administer a virus designed by AI to a human patient specifically to target antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Radical NewMetrics refers to the agent as a phage, a virus used to attack bacteria.
Details such as the exact administration date, the patient’s condition, and treatment progress have not been disclosed. However, if the approach proves successful, the company notes that it could pave the way for personalized treatments tailored to each patient’s specific drug-resistant bacteria.
