Shares of SpaceX and Tesla jumped after Elon Musk’s space company reported a massive shift in its business model: from mainly satellite connectivity to AI supercomputing.
For Q3, SpaceX posted $14.6 billion in revenue, up a stunning 161% year-over-year. Roughly $7.6 billion came from its AI division, now branded SI (Super Intelligence), echoing Donald Trump’s preferred term. A growing share of SpaceX’s income now comes from renting out AI compute power, not just Starlink.
A historic SpaceX–Tesla merger on the table
On the earnings call, Musk said he is seriously considering a merger between SpaceX and Tesla, and that both boards have formed committees to evaluate the deal:
“We’re pretty much in the superintelligence singularity, and there’s a lot to be gained from cooperating.”
Tesla shares rose about 3.3% ahead of its own Q3 report. Analyst Dan Ives puts the odds of a SpaceX–Tesla merger by 2027 at 80–90%, citing strategic AI and data-driven synergies.
After its June IPO, SpaceX was valued around $1.75 trillion and is now worth over $2 trillion. Tesla’s market cap is about $1.5 trillion, despite soft EV sales in several regions. A tie-up could become the largest merger in corporate history.
Flying Roadster and deepening ties
Investor excitement around Tesla was boosted by a dramatic “flying” Tesla Roadster demo: video shows the car racing up a vertical curved track, launching into the air, flipping mid-flight and landing using jet propulsion.
Musk has been quietly knitting his empire together. In February, SpaceX acquired xAI, rebranding to SpaceXAI and taking over the Grok chatbot, social network X, and a cloud-leasing business. Last year, SpaceX also bought about $100 million in Tesla Cybertrucks, highlighting operational links.
SpaceX CFO Bret Johnson reported $2.8 billion in operating income and $4.4 billion in net income, versus a $1.05 billion loss a year earlier. The company now forecasts $33–37 billion in Q1 2027 revenue, far above Wall Street’s $22.2 billion expectation, underscoring how central AI and superintelligence have become to Musk’s vision across space and EVs.
