A team at Google Deepmind has reported a milestone in game-playing AI: four AI agents running on Gemini 4 Argon have beaten Minecraft end-to-end without any human help, slaying the game's final boss, the Ender Dragon, in a fully autonomous run.
Fully autonomous multi-agent run
The researchers dropped the four agents into a randomly generated world without giving them:
- predefined roles,
- explicit strategies, or
- any game-specific tools.
From there, the agents organized themselves. According to the description, they:
- split up tasks on their own,
- warned each other about threats,
- recovered items from dead teammates, and
- logged mistakes in a shared memory.
The complete autonomous session lasted 27 hours and 14 minutes. At the standard Gemini 4 Argon pricing that is set to take effect in 2027, the run would cost $1,620.
Part of a broader trend
The report frames Minecraft as the latest example of agentic AI models beating video games that, just a few years ago, required purpose-built AI systems trained from scratch. Now, such general agentic setups are being used instead.
