The internet provides us with access to all human knowledge at any time, boosting productivity but also leading to information overload. When choices are abundant, making a decision becomes challenging. Smartphones exacerbate this issue by constantly notifying us, often distracting from more important tasks.

Paul Lagier's device condenses and curates notifications to allow for efficient information retrieval without distraction. This compact, battery-powered ambient calendar display is built around an ESP32 microcontroller and visualizes a day's schedule using a LED matrix.

  • Each LED represents a 15-minute block of time.
  • White pixels mark the timeline, while yellow pixels indicate scheduled events.

The design features a 3D-printed black grid to prevent light bleed, resulting in a crisp, retro-inspired display. The device changes modes based on its orientation and can reveal event names with a simple shake gesture.

Calendar data updates every 30 minutes via Wi-Fi, keeping the display current without intrusiveness. Lagier's project, with an estimated build cost of $15 to $30, demonstrates how smart design can reclaim attention in an age dominated by digital interruptions.
